1. Why should I join?

Greatwoman.com will be THE internet gallery for anyone who loves or admires a great woman. Here are some reasons to join:

Even if your great woman is already on this site, you can still buy her your own pixels, with your personal message and your personal link! It will be very interesting to see which great woman gets the most pixel supporters.

Your love and respect for your special great woman could be seen by millions of people. I will do my best to promote it as much as possible, and with a bit of luck it could get the same attention as Tew's website. Maybe even more, because this site has a much more positive goal: to give a tribute to every great woman in the world!

2. Why this website?

I started GreatWoman.com already in 1999! I simply thought it was a great web address: sweet, lovely and very easy to remember, which is important for the success of promoting a website.

I thought it might be great to promote some great women. However, in the first years, I was too busy to build a real website for it. In 2004 I made the current design, and I honoured my dearest wife Kaori (my personal 'great woman') by placing her in the company of some other great women. A little joke, of course: I made it look as if she is also world famous like Oprah, queen Nefertiti, Linda McCartney and Princess Diana, to name but a few great women. My wife Kaori makes great ceramic art. Please take a look at her website www.3GA.com. Maybe one day she will be world famous too. I really think that some of her work could easily be in some top museums. Who knows, this site might help...

Recently I heard about Alex Tew, an English student who made a very successful website www.milliondollarhomepage.com, selling pixels for $1 each. It did not sound like a great idea at first, but at some moment, two million people visited his site within one week. Wow, what a success! A new way of advertising, wich might change the concept of banners and sponsored links.

Tew's pixel concept immediately inspired me to expand my GreatWoman.com website. I definitely do not want to copy his idea 100%. It is just that two ideas come together: promotion for every great woman in the world, and selling individual pixels. What started as a promotion just for my wife and some other great women, can now turn into a tribute to every great woman in the world! Your chance to join!

3. Who are you?

My name is Walter Goyen. I live in The Netherlands, where I studied computer science at the Technical University Eindhoven. Gradually my work changed into the advertisement business. I am the 'internal advertisement agency' for a successful Dutch software company, and with my Japanese wife I run a small advertisement agency called LIQUA ('Life Quality'). My main activities are graphic design (leaflets, books, logo's, brochures, magazines, cd sleeves etc.), text writing and designing & building websites. My wife offers Japanese translation for Dutch companies. If you are interested, please visit my website, which is mostly in Dutch, with one summary page in English.

4. Why can't I buy a single pixel?

Simply for practical reasons. It is just too much adminstrative fuzz for me to do that. My bookkeeper and me would get crazy. And it would almost be impossible to spot individual pixels. I decided to sell the pixels in blocks of 10x10 pixels, each 25 euro. You are free to choose connected blocks or to spread them around the field, each with a different weblink. Just let me know what you want.

5. Can I choose any colours for my pixels?

Sorry, no. You'll have to adjust to the colour palette of this site, which means a colour range from black to white, and shades of purple / pink. I want the graphic design of this site to be very stylish, unique and super recognizable, on any image scale. If I would allow random colours, it would quickly become a total chaos, like almost all other pixel sites. Just check 'the Alex Tew original', where everyone is screaming for attention. My goal is that this site will be promoted on lots of other sites. If they make a small screen shot, it will still have the same stylish and recognizable purple / pink feeling.

6. Twentyfive euro, isn't that a lot?

YES and NO.

Yes, there is quite a lot you can do with 25 euro, I won't deny that. You'll get a bottle of whisky for it, to name just one possibility...

And NO, it is not a lot if you care to see it from a different perspective. If you'd buy a big bouquet of flowers for your mother's or lover's birthday, it would cost you at least 25 euro (Holland) and even double in Japan. But flowers will be gone after ten days... Even an exclusive perfume and that exclusive Schotch will be gone after one or two years (if not sooner, mmmm...)

But your love statement on Greatwoman.com will be there for many, many years. Probably as long as I will live, and I hope to get old, bacause I have lots more plans! If you buy a tribute on Greatwoman.com, you will be the talk of the town. Image everyone on the birthday party with their traditional gifts! Your love declaration can be on the most romantic pixel gallery on the internet... The original 'milliondollarhomepage' has had millions of visitors and lots of attention in magazines, newspaper, tv and weblogs. I hope this site will have the same effect, and Greatwoman.com is SO much more ROMANTIC! Can you think of a more original gesture for your personal 'great woman'? Well then...

7. Are you a copy-cat?

No! I started this website already at 17 November 1999! You can easily verify that on any domain information site. The current design of this site has been like this since 2004, long before anyone heard about pixel selling sites.

Of course I will not deny that I am very much inspired by the www.milliondollarhomepage.com website of Alex Tew. What an amazin development! At the beginning of 2006, I heard about the success of his site, and immediately the two ideas synthesized. The pixel selling principle is obviously his idea, the rest of the ideas are mine. I think my idea is a far more positive contribution to the internet than just a random bunch of advertisement pixels. I don't want to promote casino's, phone cards, poker clubs, ringtones, download websites, online games et cetera.

I respect women very much. I have the greatest mother anyone could wish, she is a real saint, I owe her (and of course my great father) so much. And I am totally in love with my great wife Kaori. The way we met and got married, is a miracle by itself, and I am super happy ever since. This site is in the first place my tribute to them!

8. Why should I join NOW?

The pixel homepage of Greatwoman.com started in January 2006. The first pixel buyers will have freedom to place their pixels anywhere on the page. If you want to be on the top lines, be quick, now is your chance! If you prefer a free spot somewhere in the middle, go ahead and choose NOW. You still have plenty of possibilities in the first phase!

Pixels at the edges will always remain at the edge. The top lines will probably be sold the first. Pixels in the middle of the page will have the benefit of free space in the beginning, so you'll draw lots of attention, even with a the smallest block of 10x10 pixels! In a later stadium, I might have to move blocks a bit for practical reasons (if someone wants to buy a big block), but I try to prevent that.

The milliondollarhomepage sold the last 1000 pixels on Ebay for an amazing price of over $160 per pixel! Really, no kidding. Don't worry, I won't start with charging $150 per pixel, of course. But if things go well, I might decide to raise the 0,25 euro per pixel price at some point, before the site reaches the last 1000 pixels. We'll see, maybe not, I don't know yet. But if you want to be sure of the 0,25 euro price, buy your pixels NOW!
